Over the course of a decade, we see trends in fashion, entertainment, interests, and more. Just as all these things ebb and flow, wedding trends change too. Here are some of the ways weddings have transformed in the past decade.
1. The Average Marriage Age
First, the average age for marriage has risen over the past 10 years. In 2010, the average age of brides was 28. Today, the average age is 30. Likewise, the average age has increased for grooms as well. In 2010, it was 31 and today it is 34. This average seems to go up a little each year.
2. Guest Counts
Over the past 10 years, the size of weddings has slightly decreased. In 2010, the average wedding had 141 guests. Today’s average wedding has 131 guests. The trend toward smaller weddings seems to focus on the idea that you don’t have to invite EVERYONE to your wedding, only those you truly want to have share in your special day.
3. Spending Per Guest
Today, couples are spending more per guest than 10 years ago. In 2010, the average wedding cost $194 per guest and today this number is closer to $260. This increase could have several factors. After all, the average cost of everything has gone up in the past 10 years. However, couples are also opting for more personalized experiences, many of which extend beyond a single wedding day.
4. Wedding Attire
The most popular wedding dress code today is semi-formal. This is similar to 2010. However, there are more casual weddings taking place today than there were 10 years ago. Meanwhile, black-tie weddings have slowly been declining (18 percent in 2010 vs 15 percent in 2020).
5. Wedding Season
In 2010, the most popular season to tie the knot was summer. That year, nearly a third of all weddings took place in either June or July. Since then, the trend has shifted toward fall, and now nearly a third of weddings happen between September and November.
6. Wedding Setting
The shift in wedding season is likely related to the shift in setting. In 2010, 55 percent of weddings were indoors. Now, the majority of couples are taking their weddings to the outdoors. As more weddings take place outside, it’s no wonder that more weddings are taking place during milder weather months.
7. Personalization
Another major trend that’s changed in the past decade is personalization at weddings. About 30 percent of couples offer a signature cocktail at their weddings -- twice as many as a decade ago. Many couples are also personalizing their wedding menus and serving their favorite dishes. About 20 percent of couples today also incorporate religious, cultural, or ethnic elements into their special day.
