Wedding Budgeting: Where to Splurge and Where to Save

Wedding Budgeting: Where to Splurge and Where to Save
When it comes to wedding planning and budgeting, there's a lot to consider. You have to make decision after decision, weighing out where you can save money and where you should splurge.

Since your wedding is one of the most memorable days of your life, there are probably a few key things you won’t want to skimp on. However, there are several other areas where you could save money and barely even notice a difference.

The decisions about where to save and what to splurge on should be based on your personal priorities. For example, some couples will have their hearts set on a particular venue, while others may be open to looking at several locations in various price ranges. There are some areas, though, that we never recommend skimping on. Here are our top three.

1. Wedding bands

You knew this was coming, right? Of course, as professional jewelers, we recommend splurging on your wedding bands. This suggestion is practical, though. Think about it — your wedding is a one-day event (albeit an amazing one-day event). Meanwhile, your wedding bands will be on your fingers for the rest of your lives. If you choose rings that you don’t love due to budget concerns, you will live with that decision every single day! On the other hand, if you decide to spend less on some other wedding costs (such as flowers or the wedding cake), you’ll likely never think about it again.

2. Photographer

Photography is another wedding expense that is worth the splurge. Just as you’ll wear your wedding bands long after the final dance has been danced, you will have your pictures to treasure forevermore. So, consider hiring a reputable photographer you know and trust and who understands your unique vision for your wedding photos. Experienced wedding photographers can be on the pricey side, but it’s best not to cut corners here. If you do, you could end up with disappointing wedding pictures (and loads of regret).

3. Wedding Dress

Your wedding dress is another bridal expense that’s worth splurging on. No, you probably won’t ever wear it again, but you will most likely keep it forever. You will also remember the feeling of wearing it and admire it in photos for years to come. After all, most women only get the chance to be a bride once, so why not do it right? You deserve to feel beautiful and luxurious on your special day, so spring for that dress you want!

When deciding where you can save in your wedding budget, consider your priorities. Here are some questions to ask yourselves that can help you determine what’s most important to you both and what’s secondary.
  • Do you want a large wedding or a small wedding?
  • Do you want to get married on a Saturday, or could a Friday or Sunday wedding work just as well?
  • Is there a particular venue you want, or could you look around at different options?
  • Does either of you want a certain menu or an open bar?
Depending on your priorities, you could consider saving on your flowers, cake, venue, or menu. You could choose to have a smaller guest list and serve only wine and beer rather than an open bar. Or maybe you could opt for a Friday night or Sunday wedding to make more room in your budget.

Remember that no matter what decisions you make, your wedding will be an incredible and memorable day. Try not to stress about tiny details. Instead, keep the main thing the main thing — you’re getting married!
