The Do's and Don'ts of Announcing Your Engagement

The Do's and Don'ts of Announcing Your Engagement
Are you recently engaged and preparing to announce it to the world? Or are you hoping to be engaged soon, so you’re thinking ahead to announcements? If so, read on!

Getting engaged is an exciting milestone, and you’re probably eager to tell everyone you know. However, there are some best practices when it comes to announcing your engagement that you should consider following. Here are some of the “do’s and don’ts” of announcing your engagement.

Do Tell Your Loved Ones First

You knew this was coming, right? Many couples have made the mistake of announcing their engagement on social media before telling their friends and family. And while no one can really tell you how to announce your own engagement, you probably want to avoid hurting the people closest to you by telling them in a more personal way. Your parents, grandparents, siblings, and closest friends would likely appreciate hearing the news from you in person or over the phone rather than through a Facebook post.

Don’t Forget to Celebrate

Often, when a couple gets engaged, they think the next step is to jump right into wedding planning. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but be sure to take some time to celebrate your engagement too! You’ll have plenty of time for planning the wedding (and stressing over every detail), so don’t miss the opportunity to savor this special time together.

Do Post on Social Media

After you’ve celebrated your engagement and shared the news with your closest love ones, then it’s officially time to share on social media! You can wait until you have professional pictures done, or you can take a fun photo of yourselves. There’s no right or wrong way to share your engagement on social media, so feel free to be creative (but don’t overthink it)!

Don’t Share Too Many Wedding Details

Lastly, make sure that when you’re telling friends and family about your wedding plans that you don’t overshare details. There are two main reasons why you should avoid oversharing: First, early on in the planning process, you may think you want certain things only to realize later you’d rather do something else. Second, save of the excitement for later! If your guests know every detail ahead of time, you’ll lose some of the surprise and awe factor when the special day finally arrives.
