What are the Most Popular Diamond Shapes?
No matter what style of engagement ring you choose, the center diamond is (almost) always the focus. So, you’ll want to choose a diamond you love and that does what you want it to do. One factor to consider is what shape of diamond you want.

Diamond Cut vs Diamond Shape

Sometimes the terms diamond cut and diamond shape are used interchangeably, but they refer to different things. A diamond’s “cut” can mean its shape, but it also refers to how well the diamond is cut. Diamond cut is one of the “4 Cs” and refers to a diamond’s angles and the proportions and how they work together to produce and maximize brilliance.

In this post, we will be looking at the most popular diamond shapes.

The Most Popular Diamond Shapes in 2022

Round

The most popular diamond shape in 2022 (and of all time) is round. And for good reason – no other diamond shape can out-sparkle a round! If you want your diamond to sparkle across a room, a well-cut round diamond is your best bet!

Oval

Just as the name implies, an oval-shaped diamond is an elongated round. Ovals are flattering on most fingers. However, if they aren’t cut well, ovals tend to have a bowtie effect in the center which will affect sparkle.

Pear

A pear-cut diamond is similar to an oval, but one end comes to a point (like a teardrop shape). They tend to appear larger than they truly are, which is one reason why they’ve maintained popularity. Dating back to the 1400s, pear-shaped diamonds are a great choice for women who enjoy vintage styles.

Princess

A princess-cut diamond could be called a square-shaped diamond – but that wouldn’t be nearly as appealing, would it? Princess cuts have a modern, geometric appearance that looks nice in most rings. They don’t sparkle as much as traditional round diamonds, but they are still beautiful.

Emerald

Emerald-cut diamonds have a rectangular shape with cutoff corners. The step cut used for emerald-shaped diamonds does not create the same type of sparkle as other cuts, but is beautiful nonetheless. Color and clarity tend to matter more when shopping for an emerald-cut because inclusions are more noticeable than in any diamond shapes.

Cushion

Cushion-cut diamonds are cut similar to round diamonds but they have a square or rectangular shape with rounded corners. They are a good choice for brides who like a square or rectangular shape but don’t want to sacrifice sparkle.

Radiant

Radiant-cut diamonds are often confused with cushion-cuts but are quite different. A radiant-cut diamond has step cuts like an emerald. However, the cuts in a radiant are deeper – which allows for more sparkle (but more makes the diamond appear smaller).

Other Diamond Shapes

Some other, less popular diamond shapes you might see are: marquis, asscher, heart, and trillion. Like other types of fashion, engagement rings are subject to trends. For example, in the 1970s, the most popular shape by far was the marquis.
