Signs that Your Engagement Ring Needs to be Resized

How to Know When Your Engagement Ring Needs Resizing in Lancaster, PA
After a proposal, it’s very common for an engagement ring to need resizing. If you haven’t worn many rings before, though, you may not know what a proper fit actually feels like.
Here are the most common signs your engagement ring may need to be resized — and when it’s time to visit your local jeweler.
The ring comes off with almost no effort
We find that many brides-to-be (and grooms-to-be) think their rings are too small when they’re actually a perfect fit. Ideally, your ring should slide on with a small amount of effort and take just a bit more effort to remove.
If your ring comes off with almost no resistance, it’s likely too big — and that puts you at risk of losing it during everyday activities like washing your hands, applying lotion, or swimming.
It spins constantly
It’s normal for engagement rings to spin from time to time, but they shouldn’t spin constantly. A ring that spins too much is more likely to be damaged — and let’s be honest, it can get annoying fast.
To minimize spinning, we usually recommend sizing your ring as small as you comfortably can, especially if you plan to wear it every day. Even with a perfect fit, your ring may spin more during colder months when fingers shrink slightly.
It squeezes your finger
On the other hand, if your ring feels tight or uncomfortable most of the time, it’s probably too small. There will be days — especially in the summer or during pregnancy — when your fingers swell and your ring feels snug.
Most of the time, though, when your body temperature is normal, your ring should feel secure without squeezing or leaving deep indentations.
A jeweler tells you it should be resized
If a professional jeweler tells you your ring should be resized, they’re probably right. You can trust their trained eye and experience. And if they’re wrong, they should resize your ring at no charge.
At Koser Jewelers, we often find that customers think their rings should be larger than we recommend. Men, in particular, tend to wear rings that are too big. Unfortunately, we hear all too often about newlyweds losing their rings — especially on their honeymoon — when they didn’t have their finger sized professionally or didn’t follow expert guidance.
Why proper ring sizing matters more than you think
Finding the right ring size isn’t as simple as measuring your finger once. When we size your finger, we consider:
-
The size and shape of your finger
-
The shape of the ring
-
The width of the band
-
How often you plan to wear the ring
-
Whether you’ll stack it with a wedding band
After taking all of this into account, we’ll recommend a size — but you always have the final say. Just keep in mind that following professional sizing advice helps reduce the risk of losing your ring and avoids paying for multiple resizing services.
