Are you at that point in your relationship where you’re starting to think about the next steps? Maybe you’re considering proposing soon, but have no idea where to start when it comes to engagement ring shopping.

Start the Shopping Process Together

One way to know what type of ring your partner would love is to start the shopping process together. This idea was once unheard of but is now more common than not. By bringing her to the store with you, she has the chance to try rings on (maybe for the first time) and narrow down the options for you. Shopping together doesn’t mean you need to buy the ring together, but that’s completely acceptable, as well!

Check Pinterest

If you are feeling absolutely clueless about the type of ring your soon-to-be fiancée would love, start by searching her Pinterest account. Chances are that she has a collection dedicated to rings she loves! 

Now, just to be clear, most Pinterest aspirations are somewhat unrealistic and feature rings that cost millions of dollars. But you can still get an idea of the styles she likes by looking through her pins. So, try this first!

Ask Family and Friends

If she doesn’t have a Pinterest account or you can’t find a ring board, you can also try asking some of her family and friends. They may have some good ideas of what she would like. Here are some ideas for questions you could ask:

• Has she ever mentioned a type of ring she would like?
• What do you think would be most important to her in an engagement ring?
• Is there a diamond shape that she loves?
• Would she prefer a solitaire (a ring with a single diamond) or a setting with diamonds? 
• Would she like a traditional engagement ring or something unique?

Of course, if you’re planning a surprise proposal, be careful only to ask these questions of people who you trust to keep your secret.

Listen Carefully!

If you and your significant other have talked about getting married in the past, there’s a good chance she’s dropped some hints about the type of ring she would like. Listen carefully! Take note of the comments she makes about friends’ rings and what she would like. These tips will come in handy when it comes to time to choose the perfect ring.  

Consider Her Style

When you think about her style, what comes to mind? Is she trendy? Or is her still more classic and timeless? Does she like a lot of flash or does she lean toward more simple styles? If you aren’t sure how to answer these questions, it might help to recruit one of her friends for advice. Understanding her preferences will help us guide you to the right engagement ring to suit her style.
