How to Pop the Question
Well, lets admit it; ideas for how to pop the question are as numerous as the people who do. There are several important things to remember: Plan carefully; this is a story you will retell for the rest of your lives. Relax and have fun- your goal should be a great time, and special memories, not perfection. Make it special; make it speak of your relationship.
Ideas clients and friends have shared with us…
- Go to a nice restaurant for dinner. Earlier in the day drop off a cake with your proposal written in the icing. Order their special cake for dessert. When the cake arrives, she will look at the waitperson, and then at you, you will be down on one knee with the ring box in your hand.
- We had one client who scripted "Will You Marry Me" on the side of one of her cows. Boy was she surprised when she went out for the morning milking. We have the picture in the office.
- Pick up glow in the dark letters from a craft shop. Write, "Marry Me?" on the ceiling. Have her over for a romantic meal, turn the lights down low, and the glowing words on the ceiling will be a great surprise.
- One friend wrote Will You Marry Me? With Christmas lights on the side of his barn. He took her for a ride, and his brother flipped the switch just in time for her to see as they came over the hill.
- We have known a number of people to do treasure hunts over the years. One ended with a hope chest that he made for her, and the ring was hidden inside.
- We have known of people who took out ads in papers, on billboards, or at sporting events to pop the question.
- One girl we talked to always wanted to get engaged on top of the Eiffel Tower, but his college student budget didn't allow for the trip. He invited her to dinner at his apartment, and she found a trail of Hershey kisses leading her to his door. There was a note on the door instructing her to follow the kisses, and see where they lead. The chocolate kisses continued to the back of the apartment. There was a giant poster of the Eiffel Tower, and kisses all over it. She walked in, and he popped out, bent on one knee (as he was "on top of the Eiffel Tower") and popped the question.
- We know one fellow who invited his girl over to watch a movie, and at the beginning of the movie there was a "commercial" for him…Well, asking her to marry him.
- One couple we know who love the outdoors had been planning a big weekend hike. He went out a day early, and on the side of the next mountain put a giant sign with his proposal written on it. They hiked the mountain the next day, and when they stopped for a picnic, she sat down to pull out the lunch, looked up, and there was the sign. That was a fun picture!
- When I was in high school in Memphis, Tennessee, I worked in a candy store. We had a customer come in, and have us shrink wrap a diamond ring, and put it in a giant chocolate kiss. I always wondered if she swallowed it, gave it away, or what happened…the storeowner was a little nervous about liabilities.
- I have known a few people who have placed their engagement rings inside fortune cookies. Taken their girl friends out for a Chinese picnic, and given her a cookie, and asked her to "Read her fortune."
- One fellow we helped took her to Hershey Park, and proposed on top of the Ferris wheel, and another on top of the Kissing Tower.
- Years ago, a pastor at our church wanted to get engaged on Christmas Eve. As the Christmas Eve Services were over, he asked her to take a walk. He had us place a sign in our store window. "Doris will you marry me?" We also had a teddy bear in the window, holding the ring in a box. We were hiding near by, so that we could get the ring out of the store, and let him present this to her. This was particularly fun, because we got to be part of the asking.
- We know someone who got the announcer at a sporting event to say, " We have a special announcement today, Judy, Tom is wondering, will you marry him?" The Kiss Cam was conveniently pointing right at them. Call around, you'd be surprised, people love to be part of making others happy.
