I am going to make a confession to you. I have a love/hate relationship with designers. Let me explain: I am what you might call an old-fashioned jeweler, oh I love the latest styles, I am up-to-date on all the latest gem information, and we have the best tools available, but… I buy my jewelry because it's incredibly beautiful, well-made, and of a good value. I want the price on the piece to be reflected in the value of the materials, and the workmanship. It has intrinsic value that is reflected in the price. There is a whole new breed of designer jewelry that is often beautiful, but sometimes not the greatest quality gems and craftsmanship are utilized. The price is not based on the intrinsic value, but on the brand image that the marketing gurus have created. Jewelry trade journals track how much the designers spend advertising to the public, and therefore, how well they are known by the public. Often the better advertised the brand, the more over priced they are.
Here's the rub. Some designer jewelry is absolutely gorgeous, well priced, but not much!
